Columbia are known for producing high quality, good value outdoor products, and my initial impression of these Peakfreak XCRSN XCEL OutDry (a mouthful that) approach shoes when received was that the finish was excellent, and they would make an ideal trail running shoe.

A thorough external and internal inspection both visually and with my hands confirmed the quality of the workmanship. There were no signs of anything in the construction which could lead to chaffing or irritation when worn for several hours or intensive activity.

The shoes have only been in my possession for around six weeks, so a long term performance review is not possible, but they have already received plenty of abuse. They're almost constantly encrusted in mud from running around the muddy tracks near my home.

They provide an attractive footwear option too, and are therefore quite fashionable, with a bright, colourful appearance. Initially I wore them around town, to break them in, but that actually proved unnecessary because they've been comfortable from the start.

Looking like a pair of trainers, the Peakfreaks are therefore equally suitable for wearing with jeans around town, as on the trails. This versatility is useful for most travellers of course, as having items of clothing and footwear that are suitable for different situations saves on luggage size and weight.

Available in a couple of styles, including a more subdued black (appearing dark grey), but the splash of red on the Bonfire Treaasure model appeared more stylish, and appealed to me.

This is purely personal choice, but having some style options is always welcome.

Weather conditions have not always been pleasant in the past few weeks, and the shoes have coped perfectly well with whatever has been thrown at them. The rain has meant the trails have been muddy, and sloppy, yet my feet have remained, warm, dry and comfortable.

My usage to date has mainly consisted of running and walking the local canal towpath, and trails around my home. However, the shoes appear adequately sturdy, comfortable and supportive for a full day or more on the more challenging terrain of the mountains.

There does not appear to be as much cushioning as normal running training shoes, so regular running on hard roads or pavements isn't recommended, but they are ideal for the more forgiving surface of trails. I've not had any issues with slipping, and a decent tread provides sufficient grip on all but the steepest, most muddy ground.

This is the terrain they are designed for, and the removable cushioned insoles are ideally suited for walking and running on trails. Those that may need slightly more cushioning, or wishing to use them on tarmac, the addition of Sorbothane insoles will easily resolve any issues.

The shoes have been well made, from high quality materials. They appear hardwearing, capable of withstanding plenty of rough treatment and even with regular use should still be around for most of this year.

This sturdiness comes at a price, and the OutDrys do feel slightly heavy in comparison to normal road training shoes. However, they also provide a firm, secure fitting, which is comfortable, and has plenty of support. This means they are suitable for use as approach shoes, on all but the most rugged terrain, adding to their versatility.

The robust 'pull loop' seems typical of the quality materials, and finish of the shoes. I have owned several before which have parted company with the main shoe after little more than a slight tug. The ones on these however, are made of climbing tape, with good stitching, which seems 'bombproof'.

I also like that the laces are made of climbing cord, which is unlikely to snap under normal usage.

Despite the shoes being liberally smothered in mud, they scrub up pretty well with a quick brush with a stiff hand brush. This also shows their suitability for travelling - regardless of how much dirt they make attract, they are easy to clean and can then be worn in more urban landscapes.

As an active traveller, there is a great deal to recommend about these shoes, I am especially impressed with their versatility. Their suitability in a variety of circumstances, running, trekking and urban use will save me from carrying several other pairs.

The high quality materials and equally high quality workmanship means they provide good value for money, and should provide many months of constant use.

They're already my footwear of choice for running and walking my local trails.

Pros

Versatile, easily washable and comfortable.

Cons

Slightly heavy for running shoes, non-Vibram sole, and a Sorbathane insole would improve cushioning.
